Spielberg Uses Childhood Memories As Inspiration For Video Games

Crysis Game StillI think it’s safe to say that Steven Spielberg has enough experience when it comes to developing action games. He helped put together the entire Medal of Honor series –which were based off of the film Saving Private Ryan (which was his film). He stated this week that he is on the second round of studying and playing through his new game for PC – Crysis.

We imagined that his first time being a true videogame creative director would include war, guns, and blazing glory. Instead we find out that the game is a cross between Jenga and Tetris. Apparently Spielberg is separating himself from the action games and movies that he is so well known for and getting in touch with his childhood memories.

He’d spend hours setting up his electric trains so that the locomotives would crash into one another. Now, with the help of a design team at Electronic Arts, Spielberg hopes to recapture that spirit of creative destruction in Boom Blox, out in May.

During the first levels you will have to throw balls at large piles of blocks in order to knock them down. While this might sound simple it actually requires a good bit of strategy. Yet, it still makes for a great ‘bashing’ game. “When you pick up that Wiimote and start bashing stuff, it satisfies something primal,” says Amir Rahimi, the game’s senior producer.

Spielberg has put a lot of energy and thought into the creation of his games. “He weighed in on everything from the look of the characters and environments to the way the balls move through the air to the different game modes,” Rahimi says.
