Sony Stays Ahead Of The Game With New 80GB PS3

Playstation 3 Box And ControllerSony is good at keeping the game up to speed against the war with Microsoft. They have just reduced the price of their 60GB PS3 by $100 after Microsoft decided to reduce the price of their Xbox 360. When they took their turns reducing prices they stepped on an even playing field. But last week Sony pushed forward once more by releasing an 80GB hard drive PS3.

The 80GB model has been released to provide users with more storage space for games and add-on content they purchase through Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN), a free online service PlayStation users can connect to purchase games and game-related content.

Staying ahead of the competition was not the only reason for Sony’s upgrade. It seems as though the price cut on the 60GB model was a way of phasing out the system, as buyers who want the highest-end model will still be paying $600 for a PS3. Ironically, the new 80GB PS3 lacks onboard hardware for backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 titles. The new 80GB version relies on software emulation, and though we haven’t seen side-by-side comparisons, we’re betting that hardware compatibility is better than software.

The 80GB is now available to everyone for the normal price of $599 and includes a copy of the game MotorStorm. If you are still looking to buy the cheaper 60GB PS3 than you better hurry because Sony will only be selling them till their supplies are depleted, which they are assuming will be this fall.
