Playstation Outsells Xbox 360
For awhile the Xbox 360 was beating Playstation into the ground(though it couldn’t get its hands on the Wii), but due to its recent drop in the 60GB PS3 consumers have been racing to stores to snatch them all before they dissapear.
Sony said that PS3 sales had doubled at its top five retailers after the price drop. SCEA’s marketing VP Peter Dille told Next-Gen following the price cut, “The whole world will be able to see the results when the July [NPD] charts come out.”
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter believes that a decline in perceived Xbox 360 quality over the “red rings of death” will hurt July sales for Microsoft:
“We have forecast a month-over-month decline for Xbox 360 hardware sales, due to the warranty issue announced in early July. We believe that the announcement may have disrupted sales for a week or so, as consumers struggled with the meaning of the “three red rings of death” issue. Now that the warranty has been communicated to consumers, the price has been cut, and (it appears) the design flaw that caused the high failure rate has been corrected, we believe sales will rebound.”
We’ll have to wait and see if Sony will stay ahead of the game. It is possible that once all of the 60GB PS3 machines are taken and the only ones left are the fully priced PS3’s, the Xbox 360 may gain its lead once more.
