No Wii’s From Santa This X-Mas
For those of you who don’t own a Nintendo Wii and were hoping to get it for Christmas…keep on wishing! Nintendo is having problems keeping up with the demands of the people, which means that you’re going to have a hard time finding one.
Nintendo’s President Reggie Fils-Aime stated that the company’s plans for the holiday season, including the possibility of another seasonal shortage. The consoles are still in short supply due to the system’s unrelenting popularity, and Fils-Aime doesn’t see that fact changing any time soon especially with the coming of Christmas. Most recently, the console has outsold the PS3 by a four-to-one basis in Japan, during the months of April through September.
“We have been sold out worldwide since we launched,” he told the newspaper. “Every time we put more into the marketplace, we sell more, which says that we are not even close to understanding where the threshold is between supply and demand.” How far away is the company from figuring it out? He added, “We’re working very hard to make sure that consumers are satisfied this holiday, but I can’t guarantee that we’re going to meet demand. As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record we won’t.”
Fils-Aime adds that Nintendo is doing everything it can to meet the demand for Wii, and that “The issue is not a lack of production. “The issue is we went in with a curve that was aggressive, but the demand has been substantially more than that. And the ability to ramp up production and to sustain it is not a switch that you flick on. We’re working very hard to make sure that consumers are satisfied this holiday, but I can’t guarantee that we’re going to meet demand. As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record we won’t,” said Fils-Aime.
So scratch it off that Christmas list because not even Santa will be able to get enough for everyone. If you by chance do see it on the shelf than you better grab it before someone else does. I think that in a couple months we will slowly see the Wii spiraling down and the Xbox and Playstation will once again be the top dogs.
