Gamespot Boycott Continues



Gamespot LogoI’m sure by now most have heard about the loss of Jeff Gerstmann – who was fired from GameSpot only last week. Rumors are flying around the internet that he was fired for giving a negative and low scores. When asked to change it he refused so they fired him. Whether that is true or not hasn’t been confirmed – but that doesn’t seem to stop people from blowing up and getting furious with Gamespot.

Many fans of Gerstmann have commented their anger to Gamespot and have demanded an explanation. They have even gone so far as to boycott the site and cancel their subscription. A recorded 500 customers have already cancelled and more seem to be coming.

Gamespot was hoping that after a few days the riot would calm down and everything would go back to normal. But the people have not finished spoken. They are taking it to the next step by boycotting the companies that advertise on the site and are affiliated with it.

A mass e-mail was sent this week to a number of different sites:
“Since Gamespot does a lot of thinking with their wallet, we thought we’d speak their language. We’re not just calling for a boycott of Gamespot as a whole, but for a boycott of their ADVERTISERS. Let’s send a message to the people that choose to do business with Gamespot, that they are associating their products with a dishonest organization. If just a few of these companies pull their ads, maybe Gamespot will get a clue.”

There are so many customers who purchase games and who probably don’t even care of what goes on behind the scenes of the site that the boycott may not even put a dent into them. Even if it doesn’t do any real damage - Gamespot would be wise to explain themselves and give out an apology to the people. The sooner they smooth things over, the sooner everything will be back to normal for them.
