Epic Games Feels That Unreal Engine 3 Isn’t For Wii

Ever since the release of their new Unreal Engine 3 – Epic Games has been doing everything it can to get word out to developers that it is the hottest new thing. With that being said they don’t believe that it is necessarily for everyone. Mark Rein – VP of Epic Games – has stated that it would be bad for business if they tried to port their Unreal Engine 3 for the Nintendo Wii.
But that doesn’t mean that it won’t happen. In fact someone has already started work on it.In an interview Rein stated, “I know one of our licensees who’s giving it a shot. It’s their own port, in the same way Ubisoft brought the Unreal Engine 2 to the Wii.” He will not reveal which company has decided to take the risk.
Rein believes that most people will not need this particular engine for the Wii because of the many resources that they still have to use. “Most developers will just continue to use their tools from the GameCube days, said Rein, which will make use of small enhancements that’s what the Gamebryo guys are doing – and that’s a fact.”
“We haven’t had a lot of people come to ask us for engines for the Wii,” he said in an interview earlier this year. “I think a lot of people who make games for Wii previously made games for Gamecube, and they’re recycling whatever technologies they’ve used before. It just wouldn’t make sense for us to try and compete in that space. We’re busy enough striving to get better and better in technology and support for the platforms we’re already on to go adding another platform right now.”
Whether or not using the Unreal Engine 3 for the Wii will be a success right now is up in the air. If used properly we believe that it may have some potential. After all there was some success when Ubisoft brought Unreal Engine 2 to the Wii and used it to their advantage.
